On June 2018, the Budget Committee of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) held a meeting chaired by the Patent Office director Sandris Laganovskis.

On November 23, 2017, Sandris Laganovskis was elected as the EUIPO Budget Committee`s President, becoming the first Latvian representative to be appointed to one of the four elected positions in the organization. On June 7 this year, he chaired the Budget Committee`s meeting. This is a significant achievement taking into account the role and contribution of the Budget Committee to the work of the EUIPO.

The Budget Committee`s main tasks are to make decisions with respect to matters affecting EUIPO finances. During the meeting, certain steps were taken to strengthen the internal control system – by adopting a new framework aligned with Commission Decision C(2017)2373 of 17 April 2017. At the end of the 53rd meeting, the representative of the French State Industrial Property Institute Mr Philippe Cadre was elected as the Budget Committee`s Deputy Chairperson.

Since Latvia has joined the European Union, the Patent Office is actively working with the EUIPO. Outside Cooperation Fund and Convergence program, in which Patent Office is actively involved, its employees are visiting various working groups, carrying out public information activities in the EU Trademark and Community Design matters, participating in international events and exhibitions with the aim to raise public awareness of industrial property rights.
