On 30 June, a high-level discussion was held in Geneva, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where the Pathfinders report was also presented, summarizing insights into the future of intellectual property (IP) and upcoming challenges.
At the informal panel discussion, top-level experts discussed the trends and findings highlighted in the report. One of the topics discussed was the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the IP system.
Director of the Latvian Patent Office (LPO) Agris Batalauskis highlighted the impact of AI on the basic principles of IP, as well on the entire IP system in a longer term perspective. A. Batalauskis explained in more detail how AI affects and transforms the functions of IP offices, which are moving from experimental to operational use of AI in areas such as patent examination and trademark evaluation.
The discussion was opened and closed by WIPO Director General Daren Tang. It was attended by specially invited experts: Mariela Formas, Executive Vice-President, Chamber of Pharmaceutical Innovation (CIF-Chile); Dr. Essam Bukhary, CEO of Saudi Arabian animation company Manga Productions; and Andrew Staines, Assistant Director General, WIPO.
The Pathfinders report includes the insights of more than 45 international experts on how global changes – in technology, climate, demographics and geopolitics – will be affecting the IP system. It offers possible development scenarios and challenges that will be faced in the next decade. It also explores how IP systems can maintain their relevance in a rapidly changing world, providing essential predictability and alternative scenarios for IP-driven innovation.
