In 2025, the Industrial Property Board of Appeal (the Board of Appeal) received one appeal against the decision of the Latvian Patent Office (LPO) to refuse trademark registration.

A total of 55 oppositions were filed – all to trademark registrations.  31 of them were submitted by owners of European Union trademarks (EUTMs). In 2025, 2.9% of trademark registrations were contested in opposition proceedings (2.7% in the previous year).

There were also received 9 notices for invalidation of trademark registration filed (four of them filed by owners of EUTMs), as well as 5 applications for revocation of trademark registration.

In 2025, 42 oppositions to trademark registration were examined on the merits. Of these, 24 oppositions were fully upheld, 6 were partially upheld, 9 were rejected, and the proceedings were terminated in 3 cases. In 17 opposition cases, the proceedings were terminated without reaching substantive examination of the case.

9 notices for invalidation of trademark registration were examined: 6 were fully upheld, one was partially upheld, and 2 were rejected.

7 notices for revocation of trademark registration were also examined: 3 were upheld, fully revoking the respective trademark registrations due to non-use, while 4 were partially upheld, limiting the lists of goods of the contested marks. One appeal concerning the LPO’s decision to refuse trademark registration was examined and rejected.

In 2025, the Board of Appeal prepared 49 decisions on cases where the dispute was resolved on the merits.
