In 2025, the number of applications for the registration of industrial property in Latvia increased significantly – the sharpest rise was recorded in the fields of trademarks and patents. This shows both the growing awareness among entrepreneurs and research institutions of the importance of intellectual property (IP) in ensuring competitiveness, and  the resources invested by the Latvian Patent Office (LPO) in strengthening this system.

“The results achieved in 2025 demonstrate an increasing awareness of IP importance in Latvia and the LPO's progress toward becoming a centre of support and excellence in the field of IP. The LPO will continue to actively work on educating the public and on new initiatives to create an environment that supports the development and protection of innovations,” said LPO Director Agris Batalauskis.

Promotion of IP Awareness

To raise IP awareness, the LPO organizes annual anti-counterfeiting campaigns and participates in IP-related discussions and events. Educational activities for primary and secondary school students, university students, entrepreneurs, and representatives of creative industries are held each year. The LPO organises conferences for IP professionals and provides consultations at international and national exhibitions that bring together creators of industrial property.

Last year, the LPO organised or participated in more than 60 events and other activities aimed at strengthening IP awareness and knowledge.

Although individual applicants were most active in terms of the number of filed patent applications (54), it should be noted that some of these applications were later withdrawn or rejected due to non-compliance with formal requirements. Latvian enterprises also remained relatively active in protecting their innovations. 31 patent applications were received from enterprises in 2025 as compared to 26 applications in 2024. At the same time, 26 applications were received from Latvian higher education institutions and research institutes (28 in 2024).
