VEF KVARTĀLS (VEF QUARTER) as a dialogue between the industrial heritage and future potential
Almost everyone knows the abbreviation VEF, since the origins of the State Electrotechnical Factory (VEF) can be traced back to 1919. VEF was once known as a place where electromechanical devices, telephones, and even airplanes were manufactured. The modern VEF KVARTĀLS was founded in 2009, and in cooperation with Open Architecture Design (OAD) architecture firm and architect Zane Tetere-Šulce, the degraded territory of the former Factory is being renovated creating a lively and attractive urban environment.
The company’s CEO Māris Alberts says about the symbolic meaning of their trademark: “The square in the graphic designation of the Quarter is not closed – it is open to conversation. The line is not broken – it is a continuing trajectory. The form of letters is not rigid – it is like a signal for the future. VEF QUARTER is constantly changing and developing with both global trends and the needs of our residents.”

Aiming to go beyond the existing boundaries – the BEYRON trademark for drone systems
The BEYRON trademark of the R2M Dynamics company is a word combination of “beyond” and “drone”, which reflects the main essence of the drone system it produces – to operate in any conditions and environments that exceed the capabilities of humans and drones. Although the company was founded in 2024, it has already acquired customers outside the borders of Latvia, and its goal is to become a significant player in the surveillance drone market, at the same time developing other unmanned aerial vehicles.
The company’s co-founder Maksims Dmitrijevs points out: “BEYRON is an autonomy, , continuity of operations, precision of missions, and absolute technological reliability.”
The procedure for The Trademark of the Year award is organized in two stages. First, once a quarter, experienced LPO experts select four trademarks in the Trademark of the Year for Latvia nomination and four trademarks - in the Trademark of the Year for the European Union nomination, which are further forwarded for the second evaluation stage. The winner of the Trademark of the Year award is determined among 16 trademarks registered with the LPO under the national procedure and 16 trademarks registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.
