On Monday, 13 July, within the framework of the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Agris Batalauskis, Director of the Patent Office of the Republic of Latvia (LPO), met with WIPO Director General Daren Tang. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current cooperation between Latvia and WIPO as well as its future developments.
During the meeting, both parties emphasised that a close and results-oriented collaboration has been established between the LPO and WIPO. In recent years, a number of joint initiatives have been implemented in the areas of technology transfer, IP education, judicial training, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), youth engagement, and the development of the innovation ecosystem.
The LPO Director briefed the WIPO Director General on the LPO’s strategic development priorities and Latvia’s key objectives in the fields of innovation and IP.
“The Patent Office is purposefully evolving from a traditional registration authority into a modern centre of excellence for IP and innovation, helping ideas reach the marketplace. Along this journey, WIPO has been, and will continue to be, an important strategic partner. I am confident that our successful cooperation will continue to strengthen Latvia’s innovation ecosystem and create new opportunities for our entrepreneurs, researchers and young innovators,” said Agris Batalauskis.
The meeting also covered future areas of cooperation, including support for the development of Latvia’s innovation policy, technology transfer and IP commercialisation, as well as the development of IP financing solutions, educational initiatives, and digital services. Close cooperation between national IP offices and WIPO is essential to ensuring that innovation becomes a key driver of economic growth.
The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of Latvia to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, Ivars Pundurs, and LPO Deputy Director Ēriks Rēķis.
