On November 10, Latvian State President Egils Levits met with the Director of the Patent Office Sandris Laganovskis at the Riga Castle.

The President and the Director of the Patent Office discussed the process of establishing the Unified Patent Court, expressing the hope that representatives from Latvia will also take the opportunity to apply for job competitions, when they are announced, and successfully pass the selection. S. Laganovskis informed that the Unified Patent Court could start work in late 2021 or early 2022.

E. Levits and S. Laganovskis also discussed the issues of the system of intellectual property (IP) protection, international practice for the examination of patent and trademark applications, as well as various legal aspects of the IP sector. The President welcomed the fact that the number of registered trademarks and patents in Latvia is stable every year, which is especially true for institutes and universities, confirming the competitiveness of Latvia's smart minds in the world.

The President was presented with the new book launched by the Patent Office “THE ROAD TO EXCELLENCE. Latvian Inventors in the World” in order to celebrate the centenary of the establishment of the Latvian industrial property protection system.
