“The evaluation committee have chosen the trademarks following the main principles that characterize a strong trademark – the distinctiveness, the originality of the representation, the expressiveness of the graphic design, as well as the conformity to the product and the area of business. A strong trademark should be easily perceived and remembered by consumers and not easily confused with the competitors’ marks; it should possess an individual character but still evoke associations with the product or service,” explains a member of the jury, LPO Deputy Director of the Development and International Cooperation Department Terēze Vētra.

The award process of the Trademark of the Year competition is organized in two stages. First, once a quarter, experienced LPO experts will select four trademarks in the Trademark of the Year – for Latvia nomination and four trademarks will be chosen in the Trademark of the Year – for the Europe nomination. The trademarks will further be forwarded for the second evaluation stage. The winners of the main award in both nominations will be determined among 16 trademarks registered at the LPO and 16 trademarks registered at the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

At the beginning of 2025, the trademarks will be assessed by the jury which will determine the winners of the main prize in both nominations – Trademark of the Year –for Latvia and Trademark of the Year – for Europe. The jury will include experienced LPO experts and invited professionals from the partner organisations.

The Trademark of the Year award was founded in 2013. It aims to recognise Latvian entrepreneurs who realize the benefits of industrial property protection for the long-term competitiveness and efficiency of their companies and to promote the development of Latvian entrepreneurship.
