Category: Word Marks

The trademark that unites and at the same time divides the banks of the Daugava in Riga – Krastu mačs

Every summer, in Riga, basketball enthusiasts and fans await a 24-hour basketball match between the two banks of the river Daugava – Krastu mačs. Over the past 16 years, the activity that started as a promotion of an active lifestyle in society has become a strong tradition and integral part of the Riga City Festival.

Krastu mačs symbolizes the battle between basketball enthusiasts, professionals, amateurs and beginners from the right and left banks of the river Daugava.

“Our trademark reflects the very essence of the event – a unique competition, where residents of both banks of the Daugava compete with each other around the clock to find out the strongest basketball players. In the context of our capital, it is also a story about Riga itself, where the Daugava is like the centre line on the basketball court, and the match is a unifying moment for Riga and its residents,” says Edgars Jaunups, the author of the idea.

Category: Figurative Marks

The trademark where each element symbolizes the company's activities - arbo windows

ARBO Windows manufactures wooden windows, and when it came to the creation and protection of a figurative trademark, it was decided that it should clearly express the company’s scope of activity, and each of its symbols should be reasoned.

The word “arbo” comes from the Latin “arbor” meaning “tree”, while “windows” is an English word. Accordingly, the meaning of the figurative trademark “arbo windows” is “wooden windows”. The stylized letter “о” in the word “arbo” symbolizes a woodworking milling cutter, with the help of which a wooden profile is milled. The line under the word “arbo” depicts a semi-finished window which is touched by the milling cutter “o” to start making the window profile. The green colour also symbolizes nature and natural products, created with love and precision.

Anda Sniedze, Administrative Manager at ARBO Windows, says: “Windows not only allow light to enter the room and allow you to look outside - they also say a lot about the personality of the house and its owner, their attitude towards themselves, other people and the world around.”

The procedure for the LPO’s Trademark of the Year award is organized in two stages. First, once a quarter, experienced LPO experts select four trademarks in the Trademark of the Year for Latvia nomination and four trademarks – in the Trademark of the Year for the European Union nomination that are further forwarded for the second evaluation stage. The winner of the Trademark of the Year 2025 award will be determined among 16 trademarks registered with the LPO under the national procedure and 16 trademarks registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
